CARACTERÍSTICAS E FUNCIONAMENTO DOS ACELERADORES LINEARES EM RADIOTERAPIA E ASPECTOS DA EVOLUÇÃO DO PLANEJAMENTO RADIOTERÁPICO

Resumo

A radioterapia é um dos tratamentos indicados para neoplasias, cujo principal objetivo é destruir as células tumorais a partir de feixes de radiação ionizante, poupando os tecidos sadios adjacentes e os órgãos de risco. Com os avanços tecnológicos, as técnicas em radioterapia foram aprimoradas, assim como os equipamentos utilizados para os tratamentos, possibilitando uma terapêutica mais eficaz, com menores danos aos pacientes. Assim, a proposta deste trabalho é apresentar um estudo sobre o câncer, os fundamentos de radioterapia, o funcionamento dos aceleradores lineares utilizados nos tratamentos e o planejamento da radioterapia. Os resultados obtidos através de revisão de literatura permitiram concluir que o crescente avanço tecnológico possibilitou o desenvolvimento de equipamentos mais precisos, com recursos para uma terapêutica mais eficaz, além de aprimoramento das técnicas em radioterapia e a qualidade do tratamento.

CHARACTERISTIC AND OPERATION OF LINEAR ACCELERATORS IN radiotherapy AND THE ASPECTS OF RADIOTHERAPY PLANNING DEVELOPMENT

Radiotherapy is one of the treatments indicated for neoplasia aiming at destroying the tumor cells from ionizing radiation beams while preserving adjacent healthy tissues and organs at risk. Technological advances brought technical improvement in radiotherapy as well as for the equipment used for treatments enabling a more effective therapy with minor damage to patients. Thus the purpose of this paper is to present a study on cancer, the fundamentals of radiation, the operation of linear accelerators used in treatments and radiotherapy planning. Results obtained from literature review showed that the technological advance increasing enabled the development of more accurate equipments featuring more effective therapy and improvement of radiotherapy techniques and treatment quality.
